Anton Legler

Anton Legler (born July 13, 1919 in Batsch , Yugoslavia , † December 3, 2011 in Hofstetten-Grünau ) was an Austrian military historian . From 1964 to 1981 he was head of the military science department of the Military History Museum in Vienna.

Life

Legler did military service with the Royal Hungarian Honvéd after attending high school in Novi Sad . He studied history at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , the University of Zagreb and the University of Vienna and was in Vienna in 1956 with the Eastern Europe Dissertation (story) frontier disputes between Austria and Hungary from 1491 to 1526 to the Dr. phil. PhD.

After the formation of the Austrian Armed Forces , he joined the Federal Ministry for National Defense in 1957 . From 1964 to 1981 he was the head of the military science department, which at the time was subordinate to the director of the Army History Museum in Vienna, Johann Christoph Allmayer-Beck . Legler retired as a real councilor ; his successor was Othmar Tuider , also a civilian. His main focus was the Second World War and the Vietnam War .

Legler was jointly responsible for numerous “aids” in the department and for extensive index card documentation. He published u. a. in the Austrian Military Journal and translated from Serbo-Croatian and Russian .
