Anton Renk

Anton Renk (born September 10, 1871 in Innsbruck ; † February 2, 1906 there ) was a Tyrolean writer and folklorist.

Life

Renk's father was the owner of a spice shop in Innsbruck . Both parents died very early, and Renk grew up with his grandmother. From 1890 to 1898 he studied philosophy and German in Innsbruck, but could not finish his studies. During his studies he also completed semesters abroad at the universities of Zurich and Vienna . He was particularly fond of staying in Kufstein and with relatives in Fendels in the Tyrolean Upper Court . He made several trips to Italy , which, in addition to Tyrol, served as the setting for his literary works.

Anton Renk died of the consequences of an inflammation of the ribs and pneumonia. He was buried in the municipal cemetery in Innsbruck.

Anton Renk's poem "Tiroler und Buren" (excerpt), own compilation.

Literary work

Renk was already active in literature while he was still at high school in Innsbruck. His first publication, Ranken , appeared in 1894, during his student days, in the publishing house of the Wagner University Bookstore in Innsbruck. Anton Renk was also part of the editorial team of " Scherer ", the national liberal satirical magazine in Tyrol. Little attention was paid to Renk's work during his lifetime. After his death there was a stronger, also supra-regional interest in his literary legacy, but for the most part he was denied inclusion in the literary canon.

example

Last poem. Written on the night of January 30th to 31st, 1906.

   Today is not right - tell me what you want;
Do you hear how far the thunder rolls in the cirque?

And it's dark, the stars are afraid. . .
Who was it who crept so quietly at the window -

   The rye-
heads know all kinds of things And whisper it to themselves and shake their heads.

The weather is coming - close the windows! - The noise!
The storm threw a stone from our roof.

There the moon comes and with a dull glow paints
a black cross on the living room floor.

Listen, was that not the distant Buhin's cry -
Today someone else dies - Savior, help us!

Renk was an avid mountaineer and is the first to climb the Alten Mannes and the Kuppkarlesspitze in the Glockturmkamm in the Ötztal Alps. Not far from these mountains is the Anton-Renk-Hütte , named after him , a self -catering hut of the German Alpine Club , Aachen section.

Folklore

Anton Renk was the founder of the Academic Association for Tyrolean and Vorarlberg local history and dealt primarily with customs and legends.

Others

Renk was also a pacifist and founded the Academic Peace Association Innsbruck. In particular, he was committed to peace in South Africa, where the Second Boer War raged from 1899–1902 . Renk sided with the Boer republics and was a staunch opponent of British imperialism . He denounced the war crimes of the British army in several poems that were collected in the poetry book "Tiroler und Buren".
