Anton Sabel (* 15. October 1902 in Neuwied , † 5. January 1983 in Fulda ) was a German politician of the CDU .

Life and work

Sabel was born the son of a laborer. After finishing school he learned the trade of carpenter and after graduating went on a five-year journey as a journeyman. He was a union member early on . He found a job with the Christian trade unions , the central association of Christian woodworkers, most recently as a district manager in Frankfurt . After the trade unions were banned in 1933, he worked as a welfare worker for Caritas and managed the Caritas wood yard, where up to 20 unemployed Frankfurters had to process around 35,000 quintals of firewood for socially disadvantaged households. From 1941 until the end of the war he served as a soldier in the war. After returning from captivity, he worked again for the Caritas Association in Frankfurt and in 1947 became head of the Fulda employment office. From September 16, 1957 until his retirement in 1968, Sabel was President of the Federal Agency for Employment and Unemployment Insurance .

He became known during his tenure for the so-called "Sabel Tower", which was used to describe unemployment insurance reserves of 6.6 billion marks. During this time, the number of unemployed was at an all-time low: for example, in 1965 of 0.7 percent or 147,000 unemployed with 648,000 vacancies. Sabel introduced the so-called “bad weather money” during his tenure and began to recruit foreign workers. When asked whether a recruitment agreement should be concluded with Turkey, he said that an agreement was in no way necessary in terms of labor market policy. However, he could not judge "how far the Federal Republic can shut itself off from any such proposal by the Turkish government, since Turkey has applied for membership in the EEC and occupies a not insignificant political position as a NATO partner." Pressure from abroad to conclude a recruitment agreement every two years.

Sabel received high awards for his services. He was a bearer of the Great Order of Merit with a star and shoulder ribbon . He also received the highest awards in Italy and orders from Spain, Greece and Morocco.

MP

As a directly elected member of the German Bundestag in the Fulda constituency, Sabel was a member of the German Bundestag from its first election in 1949 until September 16, 1957. During this time he was Chairman of the Bundestag Labor Committee. This body developed the Co-Determination Act for the Coal and Steel Industry, the Works Constitution Act and the Act to Establish the Federal Employment Agency.

When he was appointed President of the Federal Agency for Employment and Unemployment Insurance, he resigned his mandate.
