Anton Schimser

Anton Schimser (born February 19, 1790 in Vienna , † August 5, 1838 in Lemberg ) was an Austrian sculptor who worked in Lemberg and founded the Schimser family of sculptors.

life and work

Anton Schimser came to Lemberg in 1812, his brother Johann Baptist (1793-1856) followed him in 1826. After Johann's death, the family business was inherited by Johann's son Leopold (1833-1888), after Leopold's death his widow Viktoria Schimser (1838-1908) took over. the management of the company.

Anton Schimser studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. After graduating, he worked in Rome and Bratislava . The influence of Antonio Canova's style is noticeable in his works .

In 1812 he settled in Lviv, where he founded a sculpture workshop. From 1826 he worked with his brother Johann, from 1820 with the sculptor Hartmann Witwer (1774–1825).

Schimser mainly dealt with the grave sculpture, especially at the Lviv Lychakiv Cemetery , also outside Lviv, as well as with the sculptural decoration of the Lviv residential houses and public buildings.

In 1833 he applied unsuccessfully for the position of lecturer for sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow .
