Gabriel Anton Walter (born February 5, 1752 in Neuhausen auf den Fildern ( Upper Austria ), † April 11, 1826 in Vienna ) was one of the most important piano makers at the time of the Viennese Classic .

Life

From 1778 to 1825 Anton Walter ran a piano-making workshop on the Laimgrube in Vienna. In 1790 he received the title of " kk chamber organ builder and instrument maker" and in 1791 took the citizens' oath . In 1796 he was mentioned in the Yearbook of Tonkunst in Vienna and Prague as the most famous piano maker of his time. His instruments have been played and praised by composers such as Joseph Haydn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert . He owned an estate in Miesenbach and was Jakob Gauermann's father-in-law .

Even today, Walter pianos - both original and replica - are played on concert stages around the world.
