Jakob Gauermann (born September 3, 1773 in Oeffingen near Stuttgart , † March 27, 1843 in Miesenbach ) was a German painter , draftsman and engraver .

Gauermann first worked as a stonemason and then attended the Hohe Karlsschule in Stuttgart for three years . Having then with the head of a newly established art gallery in Stuttgart and Heilbronn , the Switzerland tours, he drew and etched on his extraordinarily rich sketches stock about six years, but had to then, as his business associate become insolvent, feed on private lessons.

In 1802 he visited Tyrol with Martin von Molitor (1759–1812) and after his return began working on both his landscape sketches and his own landscape compositions, which were followed by rural scenes from the life of the mountain dwellers in Austria . This work made him known to Archduke Johann , who commissioned him in 1811 to take the most beautiful picturesque views of Styria . In 1818 he was appointed chamber painter and remained so until the end of his life. Gauermann died on March 27, 1843. He delivered few oil paintings , on the other hand numerous watercolors . His sons Friedrich and Carl were Austrian painters.

His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 0, Row 1, Number 59). In 1870, Gauermanngasse in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st district) was named after him and his son Friedrich Gauermann.
