Anton Weber (clergyman)

Georg Anton Weber , usually G. Anton Weber or Anton Weber , (born June 27, 1846 in Hammelburg , † March 1, 1915 in Regensburg ) was a German Catholic clergyman, teacher and art historian .

Life

Weber was the son of the dyer Kaspar Weber. From 1864 to 1869 he studied Catholic theology, philosophy and philology in Würzburg . He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1869, and passed the state examination in philology in October 1869. From 1870 to 1889 he worked as a teacher in Würzburg , Augsburg and Amberg . In 1884 he received his doctorate from the University of Würzburg. In 1889 he became a professor for church history, Christian archeology and Christian art at the Lyceum in Regensburg. In 1902 he was given the title of clergyman .

He made numerous trips across Europe and Palestine. In doing so, he found Dürer's lost painting “Saint Jerome” in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon.

Weber was holder of the Order of Merit of St. Michael 4th Class and Knight of the Order of the Holy Grave .
