Life

Anton Wilhelm was a half-brother of Engelbert Arndts . He first studied political science in Bonn and Göttingen . He then devoted himself to practical mining and metallurgy in Clausthal . Arndts was later a court chamber trainee in the Cologne electoral state and from 1786 to 1794 professor of mineralogy and mining at the old university in Bonn . From 1790 he was court chamber councilor. He retained the same function after the electoral government fled to Brilon as a result of the French occupation in 1793 . As a member of a trade family, he was particularly involved in the mining industry near Endorf and was responsible for modernizing the plants. After the end of the electoral state and the transfer of the Duchy of Westphalia to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1804, he retained his status as a high official in the mining administration, but now had his office with the Hessian government in Arnsberg. As in the time of the Electorate of Cologne, he advocated a reform of the mining office of the Duchy of Westphalia . Due to severe physical ailments, he retired in 1816 and has lived as a private scholar ever since. Arndts was the author of various writings on mineralogy, mining and metallurgy. His son, the economist Karl Wilhelm Anton Arndts, published a collection of his essays posthumously .

Since 1814 Arndts was a member of the society for the entire mineralogy in Jena . He was also a member of the natural history society in Magdeburg , the regional cultural society in Arnsberg and a corresponding member of the polytechnic association for Bavaria .

He is buried in the Eichholzfriedhof in Arnsberg.
