Life

The Tyrolean Tschurtschenthaler family comes from Sexten . Franz Alois Tschurtschenthaler settled in Bolzano, worked in banking and as a wine wholesaler. From 1868 to 1871 he was President of the Bozen Chamber of Commerce and Industry and from 1864 to 1874 Vice- Mayor of the City of Bozen . His son Hermann was raised to the nobility with four brothers in 1893 with the title of Helmheim . The youngest of his eleven children was Anton von Tschurtschenthaler, who went down in Austrian military history as the hero of the Col di Lana . Oberleutnant von Tschurtschenthaler was the company commander of the Kaiserjäger at Col di Lana when it was blown up on the night of April 17-18, 1916.

After being captured by Italy as a prisoner of war, he emigrated to New York , where one of his brothers lived. As a result, he established himself as a farmer in the Dominican Republic before returning to Europe for health reasons. There he worked in banking first in Innsbruck , then in Munich .

During the Second World War, von Tschurtschenthaler, who had assumed German citizenship as part of the option , served as a lieutenant colonel in the staff of the military administration in Munich before he was appointed to the commandant of Bologna in 1944 . In 1945 he was captured by partisans and sentenced to death by shooting by a partisan court. Before that happened, however, he was taken into regular captivity by the Americans , from which he was released after a few months and was able to return home.

In 1944 he married Nini von Strobele. After the Second World War he returned to South Tyrol and became director of the Central Association of South Tyrolean Wine Growing and Cellar Cooperatives.
