biography

Antonio Brack Egg was born on June 3, 1940 in the Villa Rica District, Oxapampa Province , Pasco Region. He is a descendant of the Silzer emigrant family Egg, his mother comes from Pozuzo , his father was German. He received his secondary education in biology and chemistry at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Lima , graduated in 1963 as Profesor de Educación Secundaria , and in 1973 Brack received his doctorate at the University of Würzburg .

After his return to Peru, Antonio Brack worked in the Dirección General Forestal of the Ministry of Agriculture and was committed to the vicuña population. He acted as a consultant to the organizations PNUD , FAO , USAID and GTZ and others. He published his findings in numerous books and articles and as a participant in the television series La Buena Tierra on TV Perú . Brack Egg worked at various universities in Peru and Bolivia , including the Universidad ESAN , Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina , Universidad de San Martín de Porres and the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés , and was also involved as a coordinator in numerous projects on biodiversity in Latin America .

After the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment was created on May 13, 2008 with the support of Germany, Brack was nominated as minister and appointed on October 14, 2008 by President Alan García Pérez .

As environment minister, Antonio Brack Egg fought illegal gold mining in the tropical rainforest and also called for the military to be deployed. He advocated the creation of a market for emission rights that Peru should sell to industrialized countries in order to make environmental protection more lucrative. In addition to the activities of the internationally heavily criticized mining companies such as Doe Run , Brack wanted to concentrate on the informal mining sector and, above all, on the still largely unregulated sewage and waste disposal, which for him represented the most serious environmental problems in Peru.

When the government changed on July 28, 2011, Ricardo Giesecke Sara-Lafosse took over the post of Peruvian Environment Minister.

Awards

Antonio Brack Egg received the Premio Nacional del Medio Ambiente Barbara D'Achille in 1996 and the Esteban Campodónico por servicios a la sociedad peruana award in 2004 . Brack Egg was nominated for the Prince of Asturias Prize 2009 in the Eintracht category. Brack Egg was awarded the Grand Cross of the Peruvian Order al Mérito por Servicios Distinguidos . The taxa Phrynopus brackii and Phrygilus alaudinus bracki were named after him.
