Antonio Theba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antonio Theba (* before 1969 in Greece , † after 2000) was a Greek opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Despite its Italian- sounding name, Theba was of Greek origin. He studied violin and singing in Greece . He appeared as an opera and operetta singer ; he also worked as a singing teacher.

In the 1969/1970 season he was a guest at the Raimund Theater in Vienna . He sang the title role in the operetta Paganini . His partners were Elfie Mayerhofer (as Anna Elisa), Ernst Schütz (as Pimpinelli), Gretl Theimer and Nera Nicol .

Theba gained fame particularly through his participation in the operetta film Paganini (1973). He sang and played the title role of the devil violinist Niccolò Paganini, alongside Teresa Stratas (as Princess Anna Elisa) . The film was produced by Unitel as a joint production for ZDF and ORF . Directed by Eugen York ; the other roles sang and played: Dagmar Koller (Bella Giretti), Peter Kraus (Pimpinelli) and Johannes Heesters (Fürst Felice). The film's soundtrack was released on record and later also on CD . In 2012, the film was released on DVD by Arthaus .

His good looks and the ability to play the violin solos himself (without a double) spoke in favor of Theba as a cast. Theba embodied the type of the swift, daring, dark-haired southern lover ("rakish"; "Mediterranean hero"). With chest hair and black armpit hair, he corresponded to the male ideal of beauty of the 1970s. Theba was a "visually appealing Paganini" in the film adaptation. His "consistently committed game" received praise.

Theba's vocal performance, on the other hand, was largely criticized. Theba's highs are too forced and sound uncomfortable; all in all, Theba was vocal overtaxed with this part. He "reaches his vocal limits in almost every number". Theba also lacks the intensity and passion of Richard Tauber , the leading actor in the premiere in 1925; However, he delivers a beautiful interpretation of the tenor song "I like to kiss women". Theba does indeed manage to present some mixed notes with vocal certainty, but his hard, light-voiced timbre is too much that of a pure play tenor .

His students included his nephew, the Greek tenor Demetrios Jussi Tsinopoulos (* 1983).

Theba passed away in the first years of the 21st century. Further biographical information or more precise information about his death are not known.
