formalities

The document, in the form of a motu prorio, contains 15 articles . It was published on September 30, 2019 and commemorates the memorial day of St. Jerome (342–419 / 20), who died 1,600 years ago and was the first to translate the Bible into Latin. In principle, the letter is based on the Constitution Dei verbum and the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Verbum domini . In Article 3 of the current Motu Propio, the canonical ordinance is made for the “Sunday of the Word of God” and for the definition of the 3rd Sunday of the year . According to the papal decree, the Bible is to be solemnly enthroned at the services on "Word of God Sunday". Likewise, new lecturers or similar community services could be commissioned by the bishop at Mass

Meaning and importance

The title word Aperuit illis refers to the Gospel according to Luke ( Lk 24,45  EU ), in which it says: “Then he opened their eyes for them to understand the scriptures” ( Latin : “Tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intellegerent scripturas”) .) This happened after the risen Jesus Christ appeared to his disciples in Jerusalem ( Lk 24,36-53  EU ) and was taken up into heaven. By choosing these passages from the Bible, the Pope wants to strengthen the role of the Bible in the life of Christian communities.

“It is important to the Pope that the Bible is intended for all Christians. So it should not only concern the priests, but also the other believers. The Bible is the book of the people of God who, by listening to the Scriptures, reaches unity from dispersion and division, as the Pope put it. "
