Apostle Church in Deezbüll

The Apostle Church is a listed church building in Deezbüll , a district of Niebüll , in the district of North Friesland ( Schleswig-Holstein ). The Gothic church stands in the middle of a cemetery. The Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation Niebüll belongs to the parish of North Friesland in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Germany . The building was named Apostle Church in 1993, presumably because of the many depictions of apostles in the church. There are no references to a former church patron.

History and architecture

The church was built in red brick in the Gothic style in the 14th century . Through repairs and alterations, it has changed its appearance over the centuries, the north side has largely been preserved in its original state and conveys a corresponding image. The north portal is pointed arched and stepped, it was walled up. The wall to the east of it is divided by two pointed arched windows with pilaster strips . To the west of the portal are more recent windows. The original choir and arch were demolished and renewed in 1751. The new choir was higher and wider, so that a hall church was created. A small vestibule was added to the south wall. A beamed ceiling was drawn into the bright church interior. On the west side there is a gallery that dominates the church interior. It is adorned with images of the apostles and Christ.

The organ gallery is furnished with pictures by Carl Ludwig Jessen . They show David, Cäcilie, Paulus and John. The pictures were donated to the church by Jessen in 1914.

tower

The church was initially without a tower , a first Gothic tower was raised in the 15th century; In 1964, today's brick-clad tower was built. Significant damage to the masonry was discovered as early as the 2010s. Water penetrates at different levels and causes moisture damage. Since the masonry is partially soaked with water, it bursts open when it is frosty.

Furnishing

Main altar

The table of the altar was built in brick in 1961, modeled after the Middle Ages. The middle part of the altar consists of a shrine in the middle and two wings that come from a former five-winged oak altar. The depiction of the Coronation of Mary in the middle shrine is accompanied by three figures on each side. There are four figures in each of the two wings. These are the twelve apostles and the figures of Christophorus and Vincentius of Valencia . A millstone is added as an attribute to Vincentius . All the figures stand under carved canopies, which are decorated with wave-like ornaments. A baroque structure was added to this Gothic part of the altar at the end of the 17th century. In the center of it, a painting with the crucifixion scene can be seen between two winding columns. On the picture frame there is a carved angel's head, which is crowned with a figure of Salvator. Arkanthus tendrils stretch across the Gothic wing on both sides of the picture. In the center of the predella is a painting by Carl Ludwig Jessen, it shows the Last Supper in a colorful representation. For the apostles, the painter took people from the area as models; he himself is shown with a long white beard.

pulpit

The pulpit and the sound cover were carved from Langenhorn by Jens Süncksen in 1730 . The pulpit of the church in Langenhorn , which Süncksen's father Söncke Jensen made in 1684, served as a model . The pulpit stands over the five sides of an octagon, the sixth side adjoins at an obtuse angle. In the corners of the fields are the free plastic figures of Adam , Matthew , Mark , Salvator, Luke , John and Moses . CL Jessen painted the pictures in the fields, they show the birth of Christ, the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple, the Sermon on the Mount , the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the Ascension of Christ. The pulpit is carried by a figure of Peter.

Other equipment

  • A bell was cast by the Beseler bell foundry in Rendsburg in 1812, and it was later given to the Easter chapel in Niebüll. Today there are three bells hanging in the tower.
  • The Romanesque baptismal font made of granite is demonstrably older than the church, a square base carries the cuppa , it is decorated with heads at the four corners. Remnants of an older version are still preserved.
  • The painting on the north wall shows the Last Supper, above there are three figures (Christ and his captors) from a former Gothic altar.
  • The so-called corrugated picture, a picture puzzle , hangs on the north wall . It was donated by Peter van der Wettering in 1829. Usually such pictures consist of two parts, but this one consists of three. The front side shows the resurrection of Christ , from the right the crowning of thorns can be seen and from the left the flagellation is visible.
  • The hat holders on the west wall are remarkable, these wrought iron works represent the typical folk art of the 18th century in a special way.
