The Appenloch is a natural karst cave near Münzinghof , a district of the Middle Franconian town of Velden in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .

description

The cave , which is also known as Michel Cave or Friedrich Cave , is located on the western slope of the Appenberg and is about 1200 meters northeast of Rupprechtstegen . The cave is in Geotopkataster listed Bavaria under the number 574H016. The cave is registered in the Franconian Alb cave cadastre (HFA) as D 150; it is also registered with the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as a ground monument "cave station of prehistoric times" It is a short horizontal cave about 20 meters long. The size of the entrance is about 17 by 4 meters. The main room, about 20 meters long, 7 meters wide and up to 3 meters high, adjoins the entrance. From this rock hall, some narrow passages lead into the rugged rock. The cave is used for recreational purposes and there are only a few sinter groups , moon milk and ceiling puffs to be found. There are no stalactites worth mentioning in the cave.

history

During excavations in 1895, human skeletal remains, urn fragments and bones from various animals were found. Another excavation took place in 1930. The finds are only partially preserved.

Access

The cave is freely accessible all year round and can be explored safely. It can be reached via numerous hiking trails from Rupprechtstegen or Raitenberg . A small path leads from a gravel path up to the cave. In the immediate vicinity of the cave there are two other smaller rock grottos (Appenberg rock grottos D 150a and D 150b).
