action

Appleseed is set after the end of World War III . The world had largely been turned into a desert of rubble by this conflict and the number of people had been reduced by almost half. To escape this almost endless desolation, a group decided to rebuild their destroyed city and founded the General Management Control Office specifically for this purpose . From then on the inhabitants referred to them as Olympus. But next to humans there is now a subspecies that call themselves biodroids. These are beings that are half humans and half robots. They make up 80 percent of the population. You alone have access to the administrative complex of the new city-state. A fact that causes fear and anger in many people. The Olympus coexistence experiment, which was actually intended to make the human dream of paradise come true, is on the verge of failure.

The film begins with a nightmare about Karon Mausolos. He's just entering his apartment and calling his wife Fleia. Desperate by the sharp contrast between the world outside and Olympus, whom she describes as the golden cage, she commits suicide by throwing herself from the balcony of the apartment. Karon fails to stop them.

Deunan Knute and her friend as well as fellow combatant Buliarios Hecatonchires are subordinate to the SWAT unit as elite warriors . One of their missions is the rescue of children who are being held in a school by an armed force. A previous attempt by the ordinary police to storm and arrest ended up being a suicide squad due to unsuccessful weapons. Deunan and Buliarios quietly take control of the building with the help of the SWAT force. The first prisoner is caught in a toilet hallway. The rest of the troops are shot down with headshots in a brief exchange of fire while storming. But the only survivor manages to get rid of the handcuffs and kill the guard. He leaves a booby trap that almost killed Deunan and Buliarios. On the way out, where he goes into hiding, he kills more SWAT members. It quickly becomes clear to both that the perpetrator had to be a biodroid ( called a cyborg ). They also realize that he must have apparently foreseen the massacre.

The escaped see the policeman Calon in his apartment. Instead of recruiting new members, he gave him the address of an arms dealer to purchase landmates.

The SWAT has now identified the escaped as a terrorist named AJ Sebastian. It turns out that he had lost his right eye and ear while attempting to break into the secured complex of the Tartaros, in which the central computer GAIA is located. This makes it clear that AJ Sebastian is a top-flight terrorist who is out to change the world. Deunan Knute is determined to catch Sebastian and sees the advantage of being able to do so in a transfer to the investigation unit of the SSPD.

Prime Minister Athena and Nike also learn that AJ Sebastian has reappeared and is hating a new plan to achieve his goal. Athena is not at all enthusiastic about it and puts the last newcomers Olympus on him. These are Briareos and Deunan, who were therefore only recently brought from the outside world to Olympus for forced naturalization. Sebastian, on the other hand, has now recruited a new group of subordinate people. Together they steal the landmates and then largely destroy the Tartaros complex. The police as well as the military react immediately and attack the enemy landmates. Sebastian escapes again. With a call to the press he reveals himself to be the leader of the "Human Liberation Front" and railed against the dictatorship of the Biuruids and called on them to give up their power of government. He also denounces the setting up of military weapons for suppression in trouble spots.

During the attack, Sebastian stole some data carriers and the complete files from two target persons. The main target for Karon is Hitomi, who looks for survivors in the outside world and then brings them to Olympus. Sebastian himself wants to take control of the Multipete missiles.

Meanwhile, the military Olympus is celebrating its new weapon, a mobile fortress. The control as well as the coordination of several such units is taken over directly by the supercomputer GAIA. Karon and Sebastian agree to thwart the demonstration unit's transfer at all costs. Karon has had its own landmate built, which deviates from the usual specifications. After a vacation of several days, Buliarios and Deunan were summoned to the central complex, where they were expected.

The two arrive at the government palace a little later than expected. You are expected by Athena. Contrary to § 38 of the Olympic Charter of Freedom, there is a strict order to kill Sebastian. An arrest is rejected as a special case by the Prime Minister. Several suspects are questioned and detained during the investigation.

Karon learns of his colleagues' investigations and recognizes them as his enemies. The hiding place of the two is in the bar of Nereus, a former undercover agent of the police, who spied on the two and tries to sell his information to Buliarios and Deunan. Shortly before the attack, he tries to contact them one last time. Karon and Sebastian noticed this and were able to get rid of him in time. However, Buliarios and Deunan left some messages on the answering machine that caught the eye.

But too late. At the same time on the night of May 30th, Karon leaves with his landmate to kidnap Hitomi. She lives in the same block of flats as Buliarios and Deunan. Both are temporarily put out of action by him via the ventilation with sleep gas . Or so he thought. Both had prepared for such a devious attack with masks and are watching the kidnapping of Hitomi. Only downstairs in the parking lot of the apartment block is the landmate turned up behind him. The police are now also reacting and intervening with staff and landmates. In the hustle and bustle, Karon manages to break away. Buliarios and Deunan are arrested on suspicion of espionage. At the same time, Sebastian captured the mobile fortress.

Sebastian had Hitomi kidnapped because she is the only one with an overwrite key in her DNA that gives the power to influence the central computer GAIA according to his will. A conflict between the elite warriors and Athena is emerging among the allegations. But only now is the suspect brought up by Buliarios on his answering machine. In view of the danger, Athena had also ordered the military deployed outside Olympus back for defense. To prevent external access to GAIA, Athena has all terminals blown up. Only the last one remains under strong guard as a lure.

Karon goes to the restricted area in a police vehicle. He holds Hitomi in the hold. Buliarios watches the check-in, but he seems a bit suspicious. He and his colleague take up the chase. The transporter is attacked in the hail of bullets. Karon manages to duck in time. After the car overturned, Sebastian went to the Landmate. When the police landmates approached, Sebastian shot one of them down. He grabbed Hitomi and set her down just outside the terminal. He couldn't get any closer himself, because another wave of landmates blocked his way. So he asked Hitomi to enter the terminal. She unintentionally did this too. As a result, GAIA temporarily switched off all systems and restarted with Sebastian as the new administrator. This immediately aligns all available weapons to GAIA.

The police tracked down the mobile fortress, which is already moving through the city. With gunfire they want to keep him from reaching Tartaros. Athena, Buliarios and Deunan set out to bring GAIA back into their control. But the building is under the autonomous supervision of the central computer and tries to prevent any intrusion with traps. Buliarios is shot by a laser.

Athena and Deunan finally manage to fight their way to GAIA and destroy the security lock. GAIA then switches off again. Sebastian also loses control of the mobile fortress he has conquered. When trying to break away, Sebastian is shot in the head by landmates of the police. After that, Olympus is calm and normal life resumes.
