Archeology in china

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Archeology in China as a science was established in the early 20th century.

history

In the 1920s, the spiritual and political reformers began to question the historicity of legendary figures in Chinese culture such as Shennongs , the "Divine Farmer", and Huangdis , the "Yellow Emperor". At the same time, Western archaeologists and paleoanthropologists began to promote scientific research into prehistoric times in China. The establishment of the Academia Sinica (Chinese Academy of Sciences) in 1928 enabled the study of Chinese archeology and preparations were made for large-scale excavations .

Significant excavations were carried out by Li Ji near Anyang ( Yinxu ) in Henan Province, but these were ended when the Second World War broke out in 1937. The civil war of the late 1940s and subsequent social unrest delayed the resumption of systematic archaeological excavations and publications. When the Cultural Revolution weakened in the mid-1970s, work was resumed and the Chinese Archaeological Society ( 中国 考古学 会 ) was founded in 1979 .
