Argyreia is a plant genus of the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). The approximately 135 species are native to tropical and subtropical Asia to Queensland and Madagascar. The Hawaiian woodrose ( Argyreia nervosa ) is often cultivated in the tropics.

features

Argyreia are perennial, woody lianas . The leaves are entire and petiolate. On the underside of the leaf they are occasionally hairy silky silver.

The flowers are in few to many-flowered zymous inflorescences . The five sepals are herbaceous to almost leathery and variable in shape and size. Often the outside of the calyx is hairy. The calyx on the fruit is slightly to greatly enlarged. The crown can be small or large, the shape varies between bell-shaped, funnel-shaped or tubular. There are types with purple, red, pink or white flowers. The coronet is almost entire or deeply lobed, the areas of adhesion between the petals are hairy. The five stamens may or may not protrude beyond the crown. The scar consists of two spherical parts.

The fruits are elliptical to spherical berries . They are fleshy, leathery or floury and can be purple, red, orange or yellowish in color. They contain four or fewer seeds , these are hairless or rarely finely haired around the hilum .

distribution

The species are primarily found in tropical and subtropical Asia , four species are native to Madagascar and two species are also found in Queensland ( Australia ).

Systematics

The genus is classified within the bindweed family in the tribe Ipomoeeae . Around 90–135 species are distinguished within the genus.

Here is a selection of the types:

  • Argyreia cuneata (Willd.) Ker Gawl. : The homeland is India; Deposits in Bangladesh are questionable.
  • Argyreia hirsuta Wight & Arn. : The home is Sri Lanka and southern India.
  • Hawaiian woodrose ( Argyreia nervosa (Burm. F.) Bojer ; Syn .: Argyreia speciosa (L. f.) Sweet ): The original range extends from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar. In addition, the species is a neophyte in numerous countries in Africa, Asia, Central America and Australia.
  • Argyreia obtusifolia Lour. : It occurs from southern China to Laos and Vietnam . In Queensland the species is a neophyte.
  • Argyreia wallichii Choisy : Home is Sikkim to northern Indochina and China.
