life and work

education

Arno Haas grew up in a family of musicians and received lessons in saxophone , piano , drums and accordion at a very early age . He focused on the jazz saxophone. From 1989 to 1994 he studied jazz saxophone with Andy Scherrer at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern and graduated with a diploma. He took masterclass and private studies with Joe Lovano and Bob Malach .

Early years

1992 began his international tour and studio activity. He was a permanent member of the band of American blues musician Sidney "Guitar Crusher" Selby for more than 10 years and is still the saxophonist of Jürgen Waideles Conversation . He also worked with Wolfgang Haffner , Ricky Lawson , Franco Ambrosetti in jazz and the ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor and Alvin Lee in the blues-rock genre.

As a guest soloist with up to 250 concert engagements per year, he has worked with James Moody , Peter Herbolzheimer , Tom Novy , Wencke Myhre , Helene Fischer and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, among others .

Solo career

Arno Haas has been devoting himself increasingly to his own projects since 2013 and is on tour under his name with the Alvin Mills Project. He writes and arranges large parts of his repertoire himself and has published two solo albums of his own. In 2013 he presented his debut album Magic Hands , which was produced in Los Angeles by Tom Saviano. The style of music is funky-grooving fusion jazz with American West Coast jazz influences.

His second solo CD Back To You , also produced by Saviano in Los Angeles, was released in October 2015, and musicians from the West Coast jazz scene such as Al Jarreau , Tom Saviano, Michael O'Neill, Joel Taylor and Arno also participated in the production Lucas, Chuck Findley, Jamie Hovorka and Reggie Young were involved. The release of the CD Back To You in the US took place on 5 July 2016 the label Skytown Records.

In response to occasional criticism that his style was based too much on the American fusion style, Haas replied:

“Yes, I really like this American West Coast Sound. Music that I make is always very much linked to catchy melodies, singable and danceable. I don't see myself as a drawer as a "jazz musician" tied to any genre, but primarily as a saxophonist or musician. I do a lot of very different things. I used to be a pure alto, now I change the horns depending on the mood of the music to be played. So if I like to create a trademark then for flexibility, where sound and phrasing always have top priority. "
