Arnold Bernsmeier
Arnold Bernsmeier (born March 1, 1917 in Mennighüffen , East Westphalia , † November 13, 2000 in Kiel ) was a German internist and university professor.
Life
After graduating from the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Herford , Bernsmeier served in the Reich Labor Service and in the Wehrmacht . From the summer semester of 1939 he studied medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University . About Berlin he came to the Medical Academy Dusseldorf , where he passed the state examination in the winter semester 1943/44 and on February 18, 1944. Dr. med. received his doctorate . Drafted into the army on March 1, 1944 , Bernsmeier came to the German-Soviet war as a troop doctor . He was taken prisoner by the Soviets in July 1944 and was used in various hospitals for German prisoners of war. After his release from captivity, he became a research assistant at Gustav Bodechtel in Düsseldorf on October 1, 1946 . Research on the autonomic nervous system with Hans Schäfer at the Kerckhoff Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Bad Nauheim formed the basis of his habilitation . In the following years he dealt with the blood supply and the metabolism of the brain and heart . Since 1959 adjunct professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , he followed the call of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel to the chair of internal medicine on November 1, 1962 . As successor to Helmuth Reinwein , he headed the (undivided) 1st Medical University Clinic. He trained clinicians rather than scientists. He combined internal medicine and neurology like no other university professor .
