Hans Schaefer (doctor)

Hans Schaefer (born August 13, 1906 in Düsseldorf , † November 22, 2000 in Heidelberg ) was a German physician . He worked as a physiologist and social medicine specialist.

Life

After graduating from high school, Hans Schaefer studied medicine in Munich , Königsberg , Düsseldorf and Bonn from 1925 to 1930 . During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich . In 1930 he received his doctorate as Dr. med. at the University of Bonn , where he then worked at the physiological institute for nine years.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he became a member of the NSDAP and the Sanitäts- SA in May 1933 . In the same year he completed his habilitation in physiology . In 1940 he became an adjunct professor and head of the department for experimental pathology and therapy at the Kerckhoff Institute in Bad Nauheim . In this role he was involved in secret research on circulation and breathing in the event of detonation death and human experiments on altitude stability. He was also involved in aviation research in investigations into the electrical side effects of anoxemia (lack of oxygen in the blood) . In 1941 he became associate professor and director of the Kerckhoff Institute for Circulatory Research in Bad Nauheim, which he remained until 1949. In 1944 he also became a consulting physiologist at the Navy High Command . The medic Paul Schölmerich was one of Schaefer's students .

After a year of teaching as full professor of physiology at the medical faculty of the University of Giessen , he was appointed to the chair of physiology at the University of Heidelberg in 1950 and was appointed director of this institute in the same year. From 1953 until his death, Hans Schaefer was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 1954 he helped found the new Lions club in that city. Together with the Lions Club and the German Paulus Society , he initiated the conversation between science and theology.

Hans Schaefer performed numerous functions. From 1958 to 1988 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, and from 1961 he founded and headed the Institute for Social Medicine at Heidelberg University. From 1962 to 1974 he was the founder and president of the German Society for Social Medicine and was President of the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention for 10 years from 1965 to 1975. In addition, Hans Schaefer was a member of the Federal Health Council for 30 years until his death . In 1974 he retired, but he continued to make his knowledge available, be it from 1977 to 1984 as President of the German League for Children, as scientific director and co-author at the Funkkolleg Environment and Health or as an honorary member of the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention. In 1986 his autobiography was published under the title Findings and Confessions of a Scientist .

Hans Schaefer also became the editor of the Physiological Review and a member of the German National Academic Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Hans Schaefer died on November 22nd, 2000. He published a total of 33 books and was the author of over 1,000 publications.
