Arnold Guillet

Arnold Guillet (born January 28, 1922 in Zurich ; † July 29, 2007 ) was a Swiss publisher and publicist . He was the founder of the Catholic Christiana publishing house .

Life

Arnold Guillet grew up as the oldest of five siblings in Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen . His father died when Arnold was 13 years old. He visited with the financial support of family and relatives middle school in the boarding of the Catholic Congregation Bethlehem Mission ( "Societas Missionaria de Bethlehem (SMB)") in Werthenstein and later in Immensee at Menzingen in Switzerland. He intended to be a missionary . After graduating from high school, however, he studied philosophy , German and journalism at the University of Zurich , Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University of Hamburg .

After completing his studies, Guillet worked in the publishing industry from the late 1940s, most recently as head of the advertising department at Orell Füssli , a publishing house in Zurich . As a sideline, he built up the delivery of the Catholic Digest and the Pattloch publishing house in Switzerland. Other publishers followed - Schnell & Steiner, Sebaldus, Echter, Arena, Credo and More - and in-house productions in his Christiana publishing house, founded in 1948 . From 1960 to 1965 he also worked as a district school administrator (visitator) in Zurich to finance his publishing activities. He was only able to make a living from his publishing business from 1957.

In 1967 he relocated his publishing house to Stein am Rhein. In 1972 he founded the newspaper "Timor Domini" as the "organ of the Swiss Movement for Pope and Church", with a first edition of 150,000 copies. During his time as a publisher, he published over a thousand books.

Guillet was married twice and had a total of seven children. He suffered a stroke in 2005 , later several strokes, and was in need of care.
