Arnold Stark Lobel (born May 22, 1933 in Los Angeles , † December 4, 1987 in New York City ) was an American children's author and illustrator . He is considered one of the most important children's book authors in the USA in the 20th century.

Life

Arnold Lobel was born to Joseph and Lucille Lobel, but grew up with his grandparents, who lived with him in Schenectady , New York State. Even as a child he was often ill and had to go to long hospital stays. During this time he discovered his talent for drawing and often caricatured teachers in class, which brought the boy, who was often absent, a certain appreciation among his classmates. He moved to New York City and attended the Pratt Institute , where he studied art and drawing. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1955. In the same year he met his wife Anita Lobelwith whom he had two children. She later became a well-known children's author and illustrator like her husband.

In 1962 he published his first children's book, A Zoo for Mister Muster , after which he produced well over 100 children's books until his death, all of which he illustrated himself. Another 30 books by friends of his own , such as Charlotte Zolotow , Judith Viorst and Jean Van Leeuwen , were illustrated by him. The most famous books were those of the series Frog and Toad (Frog and Toad), which made him known throughout the United States and beyond and appeared in many editions. Many of his works have also been translated into German.

He had a deep friendship with the German actor Mathew Anden , who worked in the USA .

Arnold Lobel was gay . He came out to his family in 1974.

Lobel died of heart problems related to his AIDS disease.
