Mathew Anden , actually Mathias Schreiner , also Mathew T. Anden or Matthew Anden (born November 23, 1942 in Berlin , † July 19, 1985 in New York City ) was a German television, film and theater actor in the USA.

Life

Anden was born in Berlin in 1942 and came from a Jewish family. He was the son of Katharina Schreiner and was adopted by his aunt, Yoshi Schreiner, because his mother was in a Russian gulag . With his aunt he came to the USA in 1957, where he began to play theater as a teenager, lost his German citizenship and became an American citizen, from then on he called himself Mathew Anden.

He was rarely seen on television, so he played a guest role in the series The Waltons . In the course of his career he only appeared in four feature films, one of which was shot in his native Germany. He played with actors like Paul Newman , Burt Reynolds and Ryan O'Neal and in Germany with Nicole Heesters and Hans Peter Korff . He also appeared in guest roles in various German crime series of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Anden died on July 19, 1985 of complications from stomach cancer and AIDS . He was gay and one of the first German actors to die of AIDS.

Trivia

Andes spoke English without an accent and was close friends with the American children's author Arnold Lobel (1933–1987). Ulli Lommel took over the German synchronization of the voice of the character Simon from David and Lisa , who was portrayed by the Andes .

Theater actor

He also played numerous leading roles in theaters in Minneapolis , Maine , New Orleans , Boston and Detroit .

His time from 1970 to 1972 at various theaters in Baltimore was one of his best, so he played under the direction of John Lithgow sr. 1971 in "The beaus Strategem" by George Farquhar or in The Persecution and Murder of Jean Paul Marat portrayed by the acting group of the hospice at Charenton under the guidance of Mr. de Sade 1970, by Peter Weiss.

His most prominent role was in the off-Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera , staged in 1965, in which he played the role of Finch. The piece was performed in the New City Center, entirely in German.

Gail Strickland , Joyce van Patten and Diana Scarwid , Tyne Daly and Hurd Hatfield were among the most important theater stars with whom he appeared on stage .

Other performances were roles in Max Frisch's Andorra in 1972, Cock a doodle dandy as One-Eye-Larry in 1974 or in Gethsemane Springs in 1977 as David.

Andes also excelled as a playwright; he wrote the play "Two Sisters" that premiered in 1979 and in which he played the lead role.

He has played in plays by Harvey Perr , Peter Weiss , George Farquhar , Max Frisch and Sean O'Casey .

His career as a stage actor spanned the 1950s, 60s, 70s and up to the early 80s.
