Arnold Renz SDS , baptized as Wilhelm Renz (born January 14, 1911 in Hiltensweiler near Tettnang ; † May 17, 1986 in Feldkirch ), was a German father . He attracted a lot of attention because he carried out the great exorcism on Anneliese Michel more than 60 times in 1975 and 1976 .

Live and act

Renz was born in 1911 in Hiltensweiler near Tettnang on the Renz farm. His baptismal name was Wilhelm. He attended a high school of the Salvatorian Order . From 1933 he studied philosophy for four semesters , then six semesters theology in Passau . He was ordained a priest in 1938. Then, until October 1953, as a religious of the Salvatorians in the Chinese province of Fujian, he worked as a missionary and exorcist. He then held various chaplain positions.

From 1965 he was in charge of the parish of the St. Pius X Church in Rück-Schippach (part of the Elsenfeld parish ) and at the same time was superior of the Salvatorian Order there. At that time, Renz had achieved a certain fame in church circles, as he campaigned intensively for the beatification of the seer Barbara Weigand , who died in Schippach .

Due to reservations within his community as a result of the events surrounding the exorcism on Anneliese Michel, Renz was recalled from his work as parish priest in Rück-Schippach in December 1976 and recalled to the religious community by the Provincialate of the Salvatorians in Munich in agreement with the diocese of Würzburg .

Renz died on May 17, 1986 in Feldkirch. He was buried in his monastery in Lochau near Lindau.

Renz was generally valued for his simple but unshakably pious disposition. In addition, he was also known as a loyal supporter of the arch-conservative French archbishop and founder of the Pius brotherhood Marcel Lefebvre .

Exorcism to Anneliese Michel

Bishop Josef Stangl (here May 1959) ordered the great exorcism by Arnold Renz from Anneliese Michel in September 1975

Renz gained notoriety far beyond his sphere of activity in 1976 when it became public that, by order of the Würzburg bishop Josef Stangl , he carried out more than 60 large exorcisms to the Main Franconian teacher student Anneliese Michel from September 1975 until her death from malnutrition in July 1976 performed according to the ritual Romanum .

Due to negligent homicide of Anneliese Michel by omission that sentenced District Court Aschaffenburg Renz in April 1978 a six-month prison sentence to three years for parole was suspended.
