Arpeggio of Blue Steel ( jap. 蒼き鋼のアルペジオ, Aoki Hagane no Arupejio , dt. " Arpeggio of blue steel"), subtitle and Arpeggio of Blue Steel , is a military science fiction - Manga by Ark Performance , which also was adapted as an anime television series.

action

In the near future, large parts of the land area will be lost due to global warming and the associated rise in sea levels . In 2039, the “Nebelflotte” ( 霧 の 艦隊 , kiri no kantai ) appears out of nowhere , a fleet of independently thinking ships that are outwardly replicas of ships from the Second World War , but with superior weapon technology, speed, self-regeneration and protective shields for humanity expel from the sea. The declared aim of this mysterious fog fleet is to isolate the individual states from each other, which is why communication between the states is disrupted. Since they had superior strength, but knew no strategy or tactics, the fog ships both assumed their own personalities, referred to as mental models , as well as avatars in female form, since ship names are mostly female in order to achieve both.

17 years later, the naval officer cadet Gunzō Chihaya ( 千 早 群像 ) meets a strange girl named Iona ( イ オ ナ ). This presents itself as a fog submarine I-401 , which has overflowed from the fog fleet and has no further memories except the order given to you to obey Gunzō's instructions. Gunzō takes command of the fog submarine I-401 and begins, supported by his comrade Sō Oribe ( 織 部 僧 ) as deputy commander, Kyōhei Kashihara ( 橿 原 杏 平 ) as weapons mate, Shizuka Hazumi ( 八月 一日 静 ) as Sonar maat and Iori Watanuki ( 四月 一日 い お り ) as chief engineer to take up the fight as Aoki Hagane ("Blue Steel") against the fog fleet.

He is not only hindered by the fog fleet, but by Japanese authorities. This is partly because Gunzō acts largely independently, but also because his father Shōzō Chihaya ( 千 早 翔 像 ) defected to the Fog Fleet. It is also hampered by the deep divisions in various groups within the military and government. For example, because of the communication blockade , Japan is divided into three districts, each with its own capital ( northern Japan : Sapporo , central Japan : Tokyo , southern Japan : Nagasaki ) and each with its own prime minister and government.

One day Gunzō gets the order to drive to Yokosuka and there a newly developed weapon called "vibration warhead" ( 振動 弾 頭 , shindō dantō ), which could take on the ships of the fog fleet, to pick up and to transfer to the USA , since Japan from the raw material supply is cut off and thus no longer has the possibilities for their industrial mass production. On the way to Yokosuka they are caught by the fog heavy cruiser Takao ( タ カ オ ). With the help of a weapon that Gunzō had dismantled from the fog battleship Hyūga ( ヒ ュ ウ ガ ), which he had defeated some time before and which had joined him, and mounted on the I-401, he can defeat Takao. This then falls in love with Gunzō.

When they later have a meal with a politician who is acting as future prime minister in Nagasaki, the same city is attacked by the fast battleships Haruna ( ハ ル ナ ) and Kirishima ( キ リ シ マ ). The I-401 can defeat both, whereby Haruna still manages to save the core of the sunken Kirishima, but is thrown ashore. There she is found by a little girl named Makie Okasabe ( 刑部 蒔 絵 ) who lives with her grandfather on a large estate. She takes care of Haruna, who in turn develops friendly feelings towards Makie, while Kirishima takes on the shape of a teddy bear for camouflage. From Makie's "grandfather" they learn that Makie developed the vibration warhead and is one of the few surviving hyper-intelligent children created by his team. Shortly thereafter, they are attacked by government forces who want to eliminate Makie, with both mental models protecting them. During the fighting, Haruna's energy is so consumed that she is about to lose. When she seeks help, the I-401 mental model appears and teams up with them to protect Makie.

Anime

Together they drive to their base of operations, where Hyūga ( ヒ ュ ウ ガ ) is located, who after she was defeated by Gunzō and Iona some time ago, was reduced to her mental model and fell in love with Iona and is now in the service of the group. It also turns out that Takao is also on the island to ask Gunzō whether he will be their captain. However, she can't manage to ask and just stays. However, the Fast Battleship and flagship of the 2nd Eastern Fog Fleet Kongō and the heavy cruiser Maya are on their way. Gunzō asks the two of them ashore to talk to them, and Kongō agrees to find out why everyone who comes into contact with Gunzō turns away from the fog fleet. Finally Kongō makes the decision that Gunzō is too dangerous and tries to kill him. Hyūga and Takao defend the island so Gunzō can escape with his crew. Kongō can almost destroy I-401 / Iona, but is hacked by Hyūga so that Iona can escape. Takao also points out that the departure of the I-401 was just a diversionary maneuver and that the crew and the warhead are on board with her. After a while you can see that Iona was attacked by her sister ships I-400 and I-402, which are directly subordinate to the top flagship of the Fog Fleet, and is sinking. Takao, Hyūga, Haruna and Kirishima are looking for them but cannot find them. Iona is slowly running out of energy and Gunzō's life is dwindling, whereupon the otherwise stoic Iona becomes desperate. The unconscious Gunzō and Iona, who has used up their last reserves to keep him alive, are finally both saved by Takao.

Meanwhile, I-400 and I-402 appear at Kongō and Maya and tell Kongō of the events. When she says she will sink I-401 at all costs, showing human feelings, both of her dismiss and take her into custody. In addition, she has to find out that Maya, her closest escort ship and what came closest to her with a friend, was only a surveillance unit, whereupon she suffers a nervous breakdown in her desperation and reunites with Maya. Gunzō is now facing the immensely strengthened Kongō on the one hand and the American fog fleet, which has also arrived, on the other hand, which, however, is destroyed by Kongō in their furious rage. Iona manages to free Kongō from her anger and depression with her persuasion and to accept herself and her new humanity, whereupon Kongō calms down again and the I-401 can finally end its mission to convict the vibration warhead.

Adaptations

radio play

A radio play CD including a 60- to 70-page booklet was published on the manga in Young King OURs magazine , issue 12/2011 (October 29, 2011) and issue 1/2012 (November 30, 2011).

Anime

Television series

Studio Sanzigen adapted the manga as an anime television series under the title Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio - Ars Nova ( 蒼 き 鋼 の ア ル ペ ジ オ - ア ル ス ・ ノ ヴ ァ - , Aoki Hagane no Arupejio - Arusu Nova ). From the middle of the series onwards, this represents a separate plot that deviates from the original, but was developed in cooperation with Ark Performance, in which the figures of the fog fleet are more prominent. This is mainly due to the fact that production began in mid-2011, so later events in the manga could not be taken into account.

Directed by Seiji Kishi , assisted by Kōdai Kakimoto, while the series script is by Makoto Uezu. The character design comes from Kazuaki Morita and the mecha design from Takehiko Matsumoto. The series was produced entirely in 3D computer animation .

The 12 episodes were first broadcast from October 8 to December 24, 2013 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on MBS , as well as with an offset of up to one week on Tokyo MX , BS Nittere and AT-X .

The series was streamed with English subtitles as a simulcast parallel to the Japanese broadcast on Crunchyroll in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and large parts of Europe, including German-speaking countries.

At AnimagiC 2016, KSM Anime announced that the publisher has licensed the anime series in Germany. This was released on May 15, 2017 in a limited DVD and Blu-ray version.

From April 5 to June 21, 2014, a rerun ran on Tokyo MX and Sun TV, each of which was advertised with a one-minute comedic flash video clip. This 12-part series called Kiri-Kumas ( 霧 く ま s ), which was also made available on YouTube , shows the fog ships as teddy bears analogous to the Kirishima figure.

An illustration by a different artist is shown at the end of each episode. When it was first broadcast, every second episode was cooperated with the online trading card game Kantai Collection , which has a similar setting: ships from the Second World War personified as girls. In return, from December 24, 2013 to January 8, 2014, some figures from Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio were part of a special event in the Kantai Collection . The repetition used illustrations by other artists for all 12 episodes.

cinemamovies

The production of two feature films was announced in the Young King OURs issue 8/2014 from June 2014. music

The soundtrack for the series comes from Masato Kōda , who previously composed mainly for video games and is his first anime television series.

The opening title is Savior of Song by Nano feat. My First Story was used, with only episodes 2-8 and 11 having one, while the other episodes began directly with the plot. Several titles were used for the credits. Episode 1 used Savior of Song ; episodes 2–4 and 6–8 Blue Field ( ブ ル ー ・ フ ィ ー ル ド , Burū Fīrudo ), written and composed by Heart's Cry and sung by “Trident (Mai Fuchigami, Manami Numakura, Hibiku Nakamura)”; episodes 5, 9 and 11 Innocent Blue texted and composed by fu_mou, sung by Trident; and episode 12 Our Story composed by Takeshi Kitamura and written and sung by Nano.
