Arse Elektronika is an annual festival organized by the Austrian art and theory group monochrom . The focus of the event is on sexuality and technology and their interaction. The festival presents lectures, workshops, sex machines and erotic devices, performances and films. The curator of Arse Elektronika is Johannes Grenzfurthner . Between 2007 and 2015, the event was held in San Francisco , but Monochrom plans to relocate the venue to Europe.

Based on the series of events, four academic anthologies have been published so far.

The name Arse Elektronika is a play on words with Ars Electronica , the name of an art and technology festival in Linz .

The list of speakers includes Violet Blue , Mark Dery, Richard Kadrey , Annalee Newitz , Carol Queen , Susie Bright and Rudy Rucker , with demonstrations by Kyle Machulis ( Slashdong ), Heather Kelley, Allen Stein (from Thrillhammer ) and pornographic engineers Fucking Machines website from kink.com .

Arse Elektronika became a much-cited reference event in the debate about sex and technology, mainly because it also represents decidedly feminist and genderqueer points of view.

Curator Johannes Grenzfurthner sums up the philosophy of the festival series as follows:

From the thousand-year-old cave drawings of a vulva to the latest live porn game - technology and sexuality have always been closely linked. No one can predict what the future will bring, but the course of history so far suggests that sex will continue to play an essential role in technological development and that technologies and their application shape human sexuality. We must remember that we are a sexually motivated and tool-using species. So the question is not whether, but how this interaction will continue to change humanity.

An overview of the festivals and their discursive focus:

  • Conference 2007: “pr0nnovation? Pornography and Technological Innovation " . Addressed the question of how sexuality and pornography have stimulated technological development and innovation. The consensus of the speakers was that there is a clear connection. New technologies are still being used very quickly in the porn sector and are being adopted by porn users. They are therefore often early adopters for new products and services.
  • Conference 2008: "Do Androids Sleep with Electric Sheep: Critical Perspectives on Sex and Science Fiction" . Studied sex and technology in science fiction and futurology.
  • Conference 2009: "Of Intercourse and Intracourse" . Dedicated to the question of physicality and the technological change of bodies, also with regard to wetware, gene therapy , biotechnology and body modification . The lectures also speculated about the social changes that new technologies could bring in relation to heteronormativity .
  • Conference 2010: “Space Racy” . Dedicated to spaces, both in an architectural, psychological and aeronic sense. It was z. B. negotiated sex in space, but also questions about the change of spaces through the changed view of gender, sexualized spaces in VR and computer games . A performance gave volunteers the opportunity to be buried in a coffin for twenty minutes to have sex in it.
  • Conference 2011: "Screw the System" . Focus on political changes that sex and technology can bring about in cultures.
  • Conference 2012: “4PLAY: Gamifuckation and Its Discontents” . Debate on sex, technology and games (virtual and real).
  • Conference 2013: “id / entity” . Focus on sex, technology and identity .
  • Conference 2014: "TRANS *. *" . Discussions about sex, technology and social and personal change, also with regard to transsexuality and the transgender discussion.
  • Conference 2015: "Shoot Your Workload" . Dealing with sex, technology and work (e.g. technology and sex work , industrial action in the context of sex technology, the working conditions of workers who make sex toys ).

Arse Elektronika also organizes exhibitions, lecture performances and workshops that do not take place during the main festival, thereby expanding the umbrella brand.

In April 2010 the first Arse Elektronika exhibition "Techno (sexual) Bodies" opened in the Videotage gallery in Hong Kong . The exhibition was curated by Johannes Grenzfurthner and Isaac Leung.

In March 2019, monochrom presented the sex robot Nekropneum Fuckenbrust Neckhammer 40k as part of a special Arse Elektronika presentation at the Meta-Marathon in the NRW Forum Düsseldorf .
