Career

Arsen Alachwerdijew comes from Dagestan . He began there in his early years with the rings , focusing entirely on the free style. After the first major successes, he was delegated to the "SKA" Makhachkala army sports club . There he found an excellent environment with the good support customary in the socialist states of the time. His trainer was A. Karapetjan. Alachwerdijew first drew attention to himself when he took 3rd place in the free style flyweight at the Völkerspartakiade of the USSR in 1971 behind G. Dmitriev and N. Mikeladze. After he had improved further, he was used in 1972 at the European Championships in Katowice . He convinced there straight away and became European champion with six wins. He also managed an early victory over the multiple Bulgarian European champion Baju Baew . Alachwerdijew was also used at the Olympic Games in Munich . He had to contest eight fights there, of which he won five, he wrestled twice and against the Japanese Kiyomi Katō he lost just on points and thus the gold medal.

At the European Championships in 1973 in Lausanne Alachwerdijew successfully defended his European Championship title from the previous year with six wins. His fiercest rival here was Ali Riza Alan from Turkey , whom he was able to defeat safely on points. Arsenal won five times at the World Cup in Tehran that same year . But he lost the decisive fight for the gold medal against local hero Ibrahim Javadi just on points.

1974 Alachwerdijew was in no international championships at the start. But he was used again at the European Championships in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , where he won the European Championship title for the third time, although he had lost in a preliminary round match against Ali Riza Alan. At the world championship in 1974, the Soviet coach Telman Paschajew gave preference.

In 1976 Alachwerdijew finally finished 2nd at the European Championships in Leningrad after a surprising defeat against Henryk Gál from Hungary . This defeat was probably the main reason why the Soviet coaches used Alexander Nikolayevich Ivanov in the flyweight division at the 1976 Olympic Games , although he was also not an Olympic champion.
