Johann Hermann Hüffer (born December 25, 1784 in Münster , † January 12, 1855 there ) was a German publisher and politician.

Live and act

Hermann Hüffer came from a family that had lived in Münster for generations. His mother was Maria Sophia Franziska, the last daughter of Wilhelm Aschendorff, the son of the founder of "Aschendorff Verlag" (today the Aschendorff Group ). Hüffer took over the publishing house in the first half of the 19th century and in 1835 was a co-founder of the Münster merchants' association. In 1838 it was Johann Hermann Hüffer who was the first to publish a book by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . He is also considered to be the founder of the Westfälische Nachrichten through the establishment of the Munster Anzeiger , the core of the newspaper, in 1852. He managed the company until 1854, before handing the management over to his son Eduard.

In addition to his job as a publisher, he was also a leading politician in the province of Westphalia in the mid-19th century. Since 1817 he was a member of the city council of Münster and in 1842 became mayor of the city. Hüffer had been a member of the Westphalian Provincial Parliament since 1826 and was also a member of the United State Parliament in 1847/48. In the pre-March period he belonged to the moderate liberal opposition with his self-government ideas. However, he was hostile to the revolution of 1848. The tumult at the beginning of the revolution in Munster was also directed against him. Only reluctantly did he accept a mandate for the Prussian National Assembly . Because Berlin literally made him ill, he soon resigned from his mandate. He also resigned from the office of mayor in 1848.
