Joseph Ignaz Ritter

Joseph Ignaz Ritter (also [Josef] Ignaz Ritter ; born April 12, 1787 in Schweinitz , Principality of Liegnitz ; † January 5, 1857 in Breslau , Province of Silesia ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and church historian .

Career

Joseph Ignaz Ritter, son of an elementary school teacher, attended the Glogau grammar school and from 1806 studied Catholic theology at the University of Breslau . After being ordained a priest in 1811, he became a chaplain at churches in the diocese of Breslau , and later at St. Hedwig's Church in Berlin . He also studied theology and anthropology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University . 1821 doctorate he attended the University of Wroclaw to Dr. theol. In his dissertation he translated a Greek text by John Chrysostom .

In 1823 he received the chair for church history and patrology at the University of Bonn . In addition to lectures on pastoral theology and biblical exegesis , he began work on his main work, the multi-volume handbook of church history .

In Bonn he made the acquaintance of Georg Hermes and Hermesianism, named after Hermes . In 1830 he returned to the University of Breslau, where he was repeatedly dean of the theological faculty and rector in 1835/36 . In addition, he continued to work as a pastor.

On December 1, 1840 he was appointed as diocese administrator to the vicar capitular of the Archdiocese of Breslau , where he opposite Pope Gregory XVI. assumed an attitude loyal to Rome and probably raised hopes for the vacant Breslau bishopric. However, due to the resistance of individual members of the cathedral chapter , these were not fulfilled. Joseph Knauer was elected as the new bishop in 1843 , who appointed Ritter his vicar general . However, he lost this office in 1844 after Knauer's death. In 1845 he returned to his professorship in Breslau and was appointed cathedral dean by Melchior von Diepenbrock on April 15, 1846 .

Ignaz Ritter was a member of the First Chamber in Berlin and had a seat in the Erfurt Union Parliament . He was also active in the Catholic association movement.
