Artur Markowicz (born March 3, 1872 in Podgórze , † October 23, 1934 in Krakow ) was a Polish genre painter and graphic artist of Jewish descent. Almost all of his works were dedicated to the life of the Jewish ethnic group in small Polish towns.

He was born into an assimilated Jewish merchant family. After graduating from high school, he began to study at the Kraków Polytechnic , but broke off his training. In the years 1886–1895 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Leopold Löffler , Władysław Łuszczkiewicz , Florian Cynk and Jan Matejko . From April 29, 1895 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich in Otto Seitz's class . From 1900 to 1903 he lived in Paris and perfected his talent at the École des Beaux-Arts under the direction of Jean-Léon Gérôme . In Paris he exhibited his pictures in the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Automne .

In 1904 he returned to Krakow. For some time he lived and had his studio in the Jewish old people's home in the Kazimierz district , where he portrayed its residents and created paintings depicting the lives of the Jews there. In 1907–1908 he traveled to Jerusalem , 1910 to Italy and then from 1911 to 1912 to Belgium and the Netherlands .

From 1930 Markowicz was Honorary President of the Jewish Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts.

Artur Markowicz exhibited his paintings in Polish cities as well as in Berlin (1903), Munich (1909), Antwerp (1911), Vienna (1911, 1913, 1915) and Meran (1914).
