Mercurius Arvernus or Arvernorix is the name of a Roman Celtic , but possibly also a Germanic god . In Gallo-Roman times, Arvernus was equated with the Roman god Mercurius , god of trade and ways. The French dedicatory inscription of the Puy de Dôme , the main sanctuary of the Arverni, calls it genius .

Although his name ( "Arverni", "Arverni") with the Gallic tribe of the Arverni is to be associated, was until now only two dedicated to the Genius Arvernus dedicatory inscriptions found in their tribal area, namely the Puy de Dome ( Arverni , Province Aquitania ) and in Clermont-Ferrand ( Augustonemetum , Province of Aquitania). All other inscriptions come from the Roman province of Germania inferior and the Dekumatland . So were consecrated stones for Arvernus in Wenau in Cologne ( Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium ), two in Grip forest in Meerbusch and in the Netherlands in Roermond found. A dedicatory inscription in Miltenberg (Province of Germania superior ) was dedicated to Arvernorix .
