history

At the beginning of the 20th century bought Egyptologist Robb de Peyster Tytus total of 1,000 acres (4.05 km²) land of three farms in Tyringham and the town of Otis , he to the Ashintully Gardens stands ( "Ashintully" in the Gaelic language " on the top of the hill ”).

From 1910 to 1912, he built a white Georgian- style villa on one of the hills , which quickly became known as the Marble Palace as the white stucco glistened in the sunlight. The front of the building was adorned with a row of four columns in a Doric order . The house had no fewer than 35 rooms, 10 bathrooms and 15 fireplaces. On April 20, 1952, however, the villa burned down completely, so that today only the entrance terrace, the foundation and the four columns can be seen.

Tytus died just a year after the mansion was completed, leaving two daughters and his wife, who married Canadian Senator John S. McLennan in 1914 and had a son, John McLennan Jr., in 1915 before divorcing him. In 1937 he bought the property where he had spent the summer days of his youth and moved to a farm at the foot of the hill. He set up a recording studio there and composed contemporary music, for which he was awarded a prize by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1985. Over the years, McLennan redesigned Ashintully Gardens as they can be found today. In 1996, Katharine and John McLennan donated the property to the Trustees of Reservations.

Protected area

Ashintully Gardens are a secluded retreat in the Berkshire Mountains , surrounded by thick forest and crossed by a river. The musical style of their creator, John McLennan Jr., is also reflected in the design of the facility, which among other things contributed to winning the Hunnewell Medal of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 1997 .

The protected area is open to the public from the first Wednesday in June to the second Saturday in October, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
