Notchview is a 3,108  acres (12.6  km² ) nature reserve near Windsor in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

history

In the early 19th century, the European settlers cleared the area in what is now the protected area in order to preserve areas for agriculture and cattle breeding . Even today, stone walls from this period. But the land turned out to be too demanding due to the stony earth and only a short annual cultivation phase, so that around 1900 the existing farms were combined into larger units.

Arthur D. Budd finally merged these larger plots again to form the 3,015 acres (12.2 km²) Notch View Farm , which he bequeathed to the Trustees in 1965 and after which the current protected area is named. In 1993, the neighboring, 93 acres (0.4 km²) Smithers Woodland Preserve was added.

Protected area

The protected area is best known today for the extensive opportunities for skiing - especially for the disciplines grouped under the term Nordic skiing - but also offers bird watching and hiking in the summer months . There are 25  mi (40.2  km ) of hiking trails and a further 40 km of ski hiking trails in three different levels of difficulty.

Geologically, Notchview belongs to the Hoosac Range , which in turn is an extension of the Green Mountains in Vermont . The sanctuary is over 2,000 ft (609.6  m ) in elevation  , with Judge's Hill at 2,297 ft (700.1 m) being the highest point. Because of this location, there is snow there more than 80 days a year.

Most of the reserve is dense with a forest ecosystem known as the Northern Hardwood Forest , whose range extends from New England , New York and Pennsylvania along the Great Lakes via Minnesota and western Ontario to Canada , and overgrown with American red spruce ; only a few open spaces are regularly cleared. Titmouse , barred owl and helmet woodpecker are widespread in the forests .
