Oskar Viedebantt
Oskar Viedebantt (born September 18, 1883 in Krefeld , † December 15, 1945 in Ranis ) was a German ancient historian and high school teacher.
life and work
Oskar Viedebantt, the son of the businessman Franz Viedebantt and his wife Adele geb. Lettgau, attended grammar school in Krefeld and from the summer semester of 1903 studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the universities of Münster , Marburg and Strasbourg (with Bruno Keil and Richard Reitzenstein ), where he received his doctorate on December 10, 1908. phil. received his doctorate and passed the teaching examination on December 12, 1908. After the preparatory service in Landsberg an der Warthe and Potsdam , he taught from April 1, 1911 as an assistant teacher at the Viktoria-Gymnasium in Potsdam. From October 1, 1911 to March 31, 1912 he was given leave of absence to continue his scientific work. On October 1, 1912, Viedebantt was appointed senior teacher. On April 1, 1917, he moved to the Kaiserin-Augusta-Gymnasium in Charlottenburg , where he was appointed director on April 1, 1927. On December 1, 1930, he moved to the grammar school in Lingen an der Ems as director of studies . In 1931 he was elected a full member of the German Archaeological Institute .
During the National Socialist era, he adapted to the prevailing ideology: On August 1, 1933, he joined the National Socialist Teachers' Association ; His membership application to the NSDAP was approved on May 1, 1937 ( membership number 4.616.321). On July 1, 1934, Viedebantt took over the management of the grammar school in Jülich . In the course of the Gleichschaltung, he made sure that almost all of the students joined Nazi organizations. After the heavy air raids on Jülich during the Second World War , the school was closed on September 3, 1944. Viedebantt moved to Ranis in Thuringia . After the end of the war he was given temporary retirement on May 31, 1945. He died on December 15, 1945 before the authorities could deal with his denazification .
Viedebantt's scientific work was mainly devoted to ancient metrology (measurement and weight), on which he wrote numerous studies. On behalf of Walter Otto , he prepared a book on ancient measurements and weights for the Handbook of Ancient Studies , which, however, never appeared.
