Tyringham Cobble is a 206  acres (0.8  km² ) nature reserve near the city of Tyringham in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

history

In the late 18th century, the first settlers cleared the wooded slopes of the eponymous Cobble Hill . Tyringham's population grew rapidly; Shakers were also among the first residents in the 1840s, who owned a 2,000-acre property that included Tyringham Cobble and grazed cattle and sheep. However, around 1885 they moved on to Hancock and Enfield , where farming promised more profit. The farmers who took over the property also grazed sheep and later also dairy cows. Hereford cattle are still there today , while other areas are used to produce hay.

In 1930 a group led by Olivia Cutting James bought the hill and some parcels in the area to prevent development. In 1961 she bequeathed her share to the trustees, in 1963 the other members of the group also transferred the rest of the property.

Protected area

From a geological point of view, the mound was formed due to massive tectonic movements that lifted local banks and exposed the bedrock. It is therefore one of the few places in New England where one can stand on massive postponement . The base of the hill is made in Ordovizium entstandenem marble while at the upper end primarily gneiss from the Precambrian is found.

There are 2 mi (3.2 km) of hiking trails available to visitors, including a section of the Appalachian Trail . The Hop Brook , where former US President Grover Cleveland preferred to fish, flows to the north of the reserve .
