The Asian German Sports Exchange Program (AGSEP) is a non-commercial non-governmental organization that has set itself the task of helping to shape the peace process , especially in Sri Lanka, through the motto "connecting sportspeople".

Intercultural communication

Elina Gansweith, an AGSEP internship student, speaks about “Micro Plastic in Bottled Drinking Water” at the “Asia-Pacific Executives Forum”, which took place on November 18, 2018 at the Hilton Colombo .

The goal is to connect people through sport. In this sense, sport is a form of social communication that overcomes language barriers and prevailing conflicts.

For more than 15 years, friendlies with back and forth between Asian ( Sri Lanka , Thailand , Vietnam , Maldives ) and mainly German sports clubs in various areas such as table tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer, hockey, martial arts or dancing have been played.

The organization is a partner of two ministries and a sports tour operator.

Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka the organization works u. a. as an advisory NGO for the Ministry of Rehabilitation. This ministry was created against the background of the peace process initiated a few years ago and the reconstruction of the northern regions (under LTTE control) of Sri Lanka. Especially the Wanni area has been damaged by years of military conflicts in the last 20 years very affected and the reconstruction of infrastructure is needed.

The organization (with Consultative Status with Ministry of Assisting Wanni Rehabilitation) supports z. B. through its own programs measures in the refugee camps in Puttalam and initiated sport programs for the internally displaced persons living there . AGSEP interns were engaged in the Ministry for Rehabilitation, Refugees and Resettlement up to and including December 15, 2003. AGSEP maintained a permanent office in the ministry.

Since then, the focus of the exchange has been on the intercultural aspect within Sri Lanka, in particular on the south / north exchange, as there has been almost no youth exchange between the northern regions and the south of the country in the past 20 years.

After the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 , both emergency aid actions (aid transport, construction of water treatment plants) and long-term projects (helping people to help themselves) were launched. These include u. a. the establishment of trauma relief centers for children and adolescents in the affected coastal regions, the introduction of a manually operated early warning system, the planning, implementation and evaluation of nationwide surveys on actually experienced help after the tsunami to assess the work of NPOs and NGOs in Sri Lanka, the construction of sports schools and children's playgrounds.
