Paul Clemens von Baumgarten

Paul Clemens Baumgarten , from 1895 von Baumgarten , (born August 28, 1848 in Dresden , † July 10, 1928 in Tübingen ) was a German pathologist .

Life

Baumgarten studied with Christian Wilhelm Braune and Ernst Leberecht Wagner in Leipzig and received his doctorate there on August 22, 1873 . Then he was assistant to Wilhelm His and Christian Wilhelm Braune at the Anatomical Institute of the University of Leipzig .

From 1874 to 1889 he was a prosector at the pathological-anatomical institute of the University of Königsberg with Ernst Neumann . From 1877 he was a private lecturer in pathological anatomy and was appointed associate professor in Königsberg in 1881. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1882 he described the tuberculosis bacillus ( Mycobacterium tuberculosis ) independently of Robert Koch .

From 1889 he was a full professor for pathological anatomy and general pathology at the University of Tübingen .

In 1895 Paul von Baumgarten was awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal title of nobility. In 1925 Paul Clemens von Baumgarten became an honorary member of the Leopoldina.
