The slight population growth is mainly due to the immigration of families and individuals from the surrounding area. A large part of the community's mostly Indian-born residents speak Spanish.
economy
From the 18th to the early 20th centuries, Asientos was the center of an area of several silver mines . Corn, beans, vegetables, agaves and opuntia are grown in the fields in the area; There are small craft shops and shops in the village itself.
history
In 1548 a group of ore prospectors led by the brothers Francisco and Diego de Ibarra roamed the region; they are considered the founder of the place, but only about 150 years later the place name Nuestra Señora de Belén de los Asientos de Ibarra arose . In 1713 the place received city rights.
Attractions
- The main attraction of the town is its colonial cityscape.
- The portal of the parish church Nuestra Señora de Belen , built in the 18th century , presents a multi-pass arch, which is rather unusual for Mexico . Outwardly, the two-storey bell tower is impressive . The interior of the church has three naves and is vaulted; the crossing yoke is spanned by a dome on an illuminated octagonal drum . Two of the paintings ( Circumcision of Christ , Mourning Mary ) are attributed to the Mexican baroque painter Miguel Cabrera (1695–1768). A figure of Christ composed of human bones is said to be over 400 years old.
- Under the church there are parts of a tunnel system dug by the miners, which was primarily used for drainage.
- Surroundings
- The convent of Tepozán, built by Franciscan monks in the 17th century , is about 2 km outside the city.
