The Partido Colorado ( German Colorado Party , full name Asociación Nacional Republicana - Partido Colorado, ANR-PC ) is a right-wing conservative political party in Paraguay .
It was founded on September 11, 1887 by General Bernardino Caballero and José Segundo Decoud under the name Partido Nacional Republicano as an opposition to the Liberals and is a largely conservative party that emphasizes patriotism and nationalism. The Partido Colorado has 1,659,814 members (as of October 2007).
support
The Partido Colorado is supported by large parts of the military and large landowners and was able to attract a large following in the rural areas in the 1920s. It was first in power from 1887 to 1904 and was then replaced by the Liberal Revolution . In 1946 she set up the government under Higinio Morínigo together with the Partido Revolucionario Febrerista . From 1947 it was again the sole ruling party. In 1954 Alfredo Stroessner put on a coup against Federico Chaves and first installed Tomás Romero Pereira as president, only to take over this office himself on August 15, 1954. In 1959 the MOPOCO (Movimiento Popular Colorado) was founded by Colorado politicians who had been driven into exile by purges. In 1989 Stroessner was overthrown by the general of the cavalry Andrés Rodríguez in a coup - but the power of government remained firmly in the hands of the Colorado party.
Current situation
In 2002, the wing, led by Lino Oviedo , Unión Nacional de Colorados Éticos split off and has since appeared as an independent party under the name Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Éticos .
One wing is the Movimiento de Reconstrucción Nacional Republicano ('Movement for National-Republican Reconstruction'), chaired by Alfredo Dominguez Stroessner, the grandson of Alfredo Stroessner .
In 2006, José A. Alderete became the chairman and he would remain in office until 2011.
In the April 2008 election, the presidential candidate Blanca Ovelar was defeated by her challenger Fernando Lugo and the Colorados lost a majority in parliament.
Lilian Graciela Samaniego González has been the party leader since September 16, 2008.
After five years in the opposition, the party returned to power with the victory of Horacio Cartes in the 2013 presidential election. The party also won the 2018 presidential election in Paraguay with its candidate Mario Abdo Benítez .
