description

Appearance and leaf

Asperula pyrenaica grows as a more or less grass-forming, perennial herbaceous plant with heights of 3 to 20 (rarely 30) centimeters. It has tap roots . The non-flowering plants are colored green. The weak, continuously herbaceous and square stems are usually short haired in the lower area with wart-like hairs and balding above. The distance between the leaves in the middle area is once to twice (rarely three times) as long as the leaves.

The opposite permanent leaves , together with the similar looking stipules up to fourfold whorled arranged. The densely tufted basal leaves have simple , ovate to obovate leaf blades. The simple leaf blades of the stem leaves are 8 to 16 millimeters long and 0.3 to 1.3 millimeters wide. The spreader tip is hyaline . The edge of the spread is slightly curled down and often lashes briefly. The midrib often extends to more than three quarters of the leaf blade length.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

The flowering period lasts from May to September. The flowers stand together with narrow lanceolate bracts in umbrella-shaped inflorescences . The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold. The sepals are either reduced or absent. The four pink-colored petals are fused to the saucer-shaped to narrow funnel-shaped, outside short or wart-shaped hairy crown with a diameter of 2.8 to 4 millimeters and the corolla tube. The corolla tube is one to one and a half times (rarely up to twice) as long as the corolla lobes. A circle is formed with four stamens not protruding from the crown .

Two carpels are one under constant, egg-shaped and papillary ovary adherent whose two chambers only one each ovule contains. The two-part stylus with the scar does not protrude beyond the crown.

The fruits of Asperula pyrenaica are dry, egg-shaped and papillary disintegrated fruits that split into two partial fruits 1.5 to 2 millimeters in size.

Occurrence

Asperula pyrenaica is endemic to the Spanish and French Pyrenees and occurs at altitudes of 1200 to 2700 meters.

Systematics

The first publication of Asperula pyrenaica was made in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum , Volume 1, page 104. A synonym - but which is sometimes treated as a valid taxon - for Asperula pyrenaica is Asperula cynanchica subsp. pyrenaica (L.) Nyman .

Luis Villar Peréz described in 1988 in Monografias del Instituto Pirenaico de Ecologia , Volume 4, page 379, a variety Asperula pyrenaica var. Ansotana (P.Monts. & L.Villar) L.Villar .

Asperula pyrenaica belongs to the section Cynanchicae within the genus Asperula . It forms there together with possibly related species with a disjoint area ( Asperula beckiana , Asperula neglecta , Asperula neilreichii and Asperula rupicola, which populate the mountain regions ) the "Asperula pyrenaica group".
