Assumption is a death and funeral doom band founded in 2011 .

history

Assumption was founded in 2011 by the multi-instrumentalist and singer Giorgio Trombino and the drummer David Lucido as a studio project in Palermo . The Sicilian musicians brought in the bassist Claudio Troise and the guitarist Matija "Dole" Dolinar to make international appearances.

The demo Mosaic of the Distant Dominion , released in 2012 via Decrepit Productions as CD and Unholy Domain Records as MC , received benevolent reviews as "epic" and as a "good indication of the band's dormant potential." The 2014 demo was followed by Terror from Hell Records released EP The Three Appearances . The EP, which was positively received when it first appeared on webzines such as Doom-Metal.com , Voices from the Dark , and X-Crash , was re-released as a “masterpiece” in February 2020 via Everlasting Spew Records with great interest and widespread praise .

In 2018 the band released their first studio album, Absconditus, via Everlasting Spew Records and Sentient Ruin Laboratories . Absconditus was largely recognized internationally and praised as one of the "Highlights in 2018". In some reviews, critics judged the album as an expandable release that could only be viewed as a recommendation in the genre.

“This debut certainly hits a nerve of die-hard Doom / Death fans and also film fans of the Italo horror of the 80s get their money's worth when listening inclined. What the album lacks are the supporting melodies and the riffs that are anchored in the brain, and the variety that is also possible in Funeral Doom. "

- Marko Hupel on Absconditus for Eternity - Underground Music Zine

However, reviewers who praised the album as a highlight beyond the genre put the album in relation to releases by established genre representatives such as Mournful Congregation , Evoken and Ataraxie of the same year. The band is "one of the most fascinating mind-expanding and abstractly acting Death Doom bands that have emerged from the underground of the genre in recent years, which could explain why they are so criminally underestimated," said Sean Reveron, in a review written for Cvlt Nation against the critics of the album.

style

The genre allocation of the music played by Assumption varies between Death Doom and Funeral Doom . What the assessments have in common is the emphasis on a high psychedelic share and the reference to disembowelment as a significant influencing factor on the music. Funeral and Death Doom representatives as well as Death Metal are named as a further comparison variable. Among them bands like Incantation , Nile , Evoken , Winter , Esoteric , Thergothon and follow-up projects from Disembowelment d.USK and Inverloch . Perceptible influence is adventitious Pink Floyd , as well as the genre formative Death Doom and Gothic Metal sizes of Peaceville Records as My Dying Bride and Anathema awarded.

The music is seen as a dynamic change with long structures in which the guitar playing is perceived as psychedelic and "cosmic". "In the faster parts, on the other hand, deep Death Metal riffing [sic!] And sinister growling dominate" As an addition, reference is made to soundtrack elements of the Italian horror film, which particularly influence the intros with the use of flute and keyboard and are reminiscent of Lucio Fulci . The vocals are presented as a guttural growling in a style typical of Funeral Doom.
