history

Asteroid Day was founded by director Grigorij Richters (picture) and Brian May

Asteroid Day was brought to life by director Grigorij Richters and Brian May , guitarist for Queen and astrophysicist. Over 100 astronauts, scientists, engineers and artists including Richard Dawkins , Bill Nye , Peter Gabriel , Jim Lovell , Alexei Leonow , Bill Anders , Kip Thorne , Lord Martin Rees , Chris Hadfield , Rusty Schweickart and Brian Cox signed the asteroid's public declaration Days.

In February 2014 Brian May and Grigorij Richters began working on the film "51 Degrees North", the story of a fictional asteroid impact in London and the human reaction to such an event. Brian May composed the music for the film. After the film was shown at the 2014 Starmus Festival, Richters and May founded Asteroid Day in October 2014. This was announced on December 3, 2014 at a press conference held simultaneously in London and San Francisco . Grigorij Richters, Lord Martin Rees and Brian May held these at the Science Museum in London, while Ed Lu , Thomas David Jones and Rusty Schweickart were the representatives at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Therefore, December 3, 2014 is the official founding day of Asteroid Day.

In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 30th to be International Asteroid Day .

declaration

The Asteroid Day working group created the “100X Declaration” petition, which is aimed at all scientists and engineers and whose intention is to protect the earth from impacts by asteroids. Not only specialists, but all people are invited to support Asteroid Day.

The three main goals are:

  1. Use of available technology by governments and philanthropic organizations to discover near-Earth asteroids that can harm humans.
  2. A hundredfold increase in the detection rate of asteroids and an increase in the number of asteroids under observation. The aim is to achieve 100,000 discoveries per year within the next 10 years.
  3. Global adoption of Asteroid Day on June 30th each year to raise awareness of the danger posed by asteroids and how to protect them. With the UN declaration, which officially declared June 30th as Asteroid Day , this goal was achieved.

Asteroid Day 2015

According to the official homepage, over 90 global activities were carried out on June 30, 2015. 36 astronauts and cosmonauts took part in activities that day. The general goal was to increase awareness of the dangers posed by asteroids. Institutions such as the Natural History Museum in Vienna, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, the Science Museum in London, the SETI Institute , the European Space Agency , the UK Space Agency and many other organizers started the first official Asteroid Day on June 30, 2015.

Asteroid Day 2016

On the official homepage, six events were listed as official premier events for June 30, 2016: in Chile (in The Millennium Center ), in Spain (in Barcelona and in Arona on Tenerife), in the USA (in San Francisco ), in South Korea (in Gwacheon ) and Austria (in the Natural History Museum in Vienna ). In addition, numerous other events took place around the world.

Asteroid Day 2017

ESA , NASA and JAXA officially took part. The highlight was the first worldwide, 24-hour live broadcast on the subject of asteroids and the associated danger. Exhibitions, lectures, film screenings and guided sky observations took place around the world, for example. An interactive world map on the organization website listed all events.
