The Astrid Lindgren School (ALS) (formerly: Schillerschule and Carl Ulrich School ) is a primary school in Darmstadt-Arheilgen . The school was named after the writer Astrid Lindgren .

Architecture and history

The historically important centralization of the schools in Arheilgen was completed in 1914 and the latent problem of school rooms was eliminated.

At the turn of the century there were nine different schoolhouses in Arheilgen, scattered across the entire municipality, which were grouped together in one location.

The entire Astrid Lindgren School complex includes the Arheilger school island.

In 1897, the first construction phase was the Schiller School on a large community-owned property . This school building was built with exposed brickwork . The late classicist building is structured vertically by a cautiously designed central projection and horizontally by surrounding sandstone cornices.

The school buildings, built in the traditional style in 1907 and 1914, are connected to one another by a central wing. The relatively simple facade of the building is emphasized in the northern part - the main entrance - by the sandstone frame of the entrance and the plaster structure of the facade and additionally by the window design of the stairwell . The entire school building has a massive mansard roof with plain tile roofing and a small clock tower .

Monument protection

The Astrid Lindgren School is a typical example of architecture from the 1890s to 1910s in Darmstadt and is a listed building .
