The nymph umbel ( Astydamia latifolia ) is the only species of the monotypical genus Astydamia and belongs to the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Nymphendolde grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The fleshy leaves are bare, widened at the base and half encompassing the stem. The color is green, often yellow-green. The sections of the pinnate leaves are irregularly cut, serrated and turned inward.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from December to April. On an upright, green to gray-green inflorescence stem there is a double-gold inflorescence , which is up to 15-rayed. The umbel can reach a diameter of up to 15 centimeters and has numerous lanceolate bracts and bracts . The flowers are yellow.

The light brown fruits are laterally widened and each have three ribs.

Occurrence

The halophytic nymph umbel grows in the splash water area of ​​the rocky coasts. The distribution area includes Morocco , the Ilhas Selvagens and the Canary Islands . In the older literature a Macaronesian , Mauritanian distribution is given.

For the Canary Islands, the nymph umbel is one of the most representative elements of the plant communities of the coastal zones, especially along the northern coasts. There Astydamia latifolia, together with Frankenia ericifolia , Schizogyne sericea and Limonium pectinatum, are characteristic of the Frankenio-Astydamietum plant community.

It was first published in 1782 under the name (Basionym) Crithmum latifolium by Carl von Linné the Younger in Supplementum Plantarum Systematis Vegetabilium Editionis Decimae Tertiae, Generum Plantarum Editiones Sextae, et Specierum Plantarum Editionis Secundae. Editum a Carolo a Linné. Brunsvigae. Page 180. The new combination to Astydamia latifolia (L. f.) Baill. was published in 1879 by Henri Ernest Baillon in Histoire des Plantes (Baillon) . The genus Astydamia DC. was Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in Collection de Memoires pour Servir a l'Histoire de Regne Vegetal ... set up. The generic name Astydamia refers to the mythical figure of Astydameia , daughter of Oceanus (Oceanus).

Astydamia latifolia is the only species in the monotypic genus Astydamia . The genus Astydamia belongs to the tribe Annesorhizeae in the subfamily Apioideae within the family Apiaceae .
