Atakpamé is the fifth largest city in Togo . According to the 1981 census, the population was 24,139, based on various calculations it is now between 72,700 in 2005 and 92,296 in 2008. Atakpamé is in the Plateaux region , of which it is the capital. Atakpamé is also the administrative center of the surrounding prefecture of Ogou. Geographically, Atakpamé is 161 km north of the capital Lomé on the western edge of the Atakora mountain range at an altitude of 250 m above sea level. NN.

Atakpamé was developed into an administrative center of the German colony Togoland . In 1911, the northern railway line from Lomé to Atakpamé and the transcontinental radio station Kamina with a range of 5,500 km, which facilitated communication between Berlin and the overseas territories in Africa, were built. In 1914, at the beginning of the First World War , the radio station was the target of the British-French campaign. The campaign began on August 6, 1914 in the coastal area, after fighting at Wahahala (north of Notsé ) the radio station was blown up by retreating German troops on August 24, and surrendered on August 26.

The population is made up of different ethnic groups from the area. As an important traffic junction, Atakpamé is located on National Road 1 that runs through Togo in a north-south direction, while larger roads branch off to the west to Boudou in the north-west and Kpalimé in the south-west. Atakpamé is connected to the Togo railway line, which also runs in a north-south direction, and also has a smaller airport, Akpaka Airport .
Atakpamé is a center for textile processing and a hub for the cotton grown in the surrounding area, coordinated by SOTOCO. In the west of Atakpamé, in a triangle with Boudou and Kpalimé in the prefecture of Amou, mainly cocoa and coffee are grown, some of which are transported away via Atakpamé. Traditional plants such as yams and fonio millet are also grown.
