Atlantis, the Lost Continent (originally Atlantis, the Lost Continent ) is an American fantasy film directed by George Pal from 1960. The screenplay is based on the play Atalanta, a Story of Atlantis by Gerald Hargreaves. The premiere in Germany took place on May 5, 1961.

The Greek fisherman Demetrios and his father Petros rescue a woman from a shipwreck. The woman is Princess Antillia. She does not mention that she comes from Atlantis , whose inhabitants have built a technologically advanced civilization. Demetrios agrees to bring Antillia back to Atlantis. When he arrives, he is enslaved.

It turns out that King Cronus is being manipulated by Zoran. Zoran gets help from the magician Sonoy, who wants to conquer the world with the mineral resources of Atlantis. The slaves break down crystals that absorb sunlight. They can then be used to shoot down heat rays. With the help of the priest Azar, Demetrios is able to save the princess from the malicious spells and prevent the wizard from taking the throne. With the princess he can escape the ruin of the island kingdom.

For the film, which was shot on the Santa Catalina Islands, California , footage from MGM productions Quo vadis? and when the marabunta is threatening used.

Main actor Sal Ponti appeared here under his pseudonym Anthony Hall. As in the movie The Mysterious Dr. Lao , the son of the director George Pal, Peter, also has a small guest role here, this time as a slave. Father George, who became famous with his science fiction classic The Time Machine , directed twice more after this film.

The set of the film took over the two-time Oscar winner George W. Davis, who was supported by the also Oscar-winning William Ferrari. Oscar winner Henry Grace acted as set decorator, Franklin Milton for the tone.

Award-winning A. Arnold Gillespie supervised the spectacular special effects on the part of the production company , while Jim Danforth was responsible for the stop-motion animations. The painted backgrounds were created by the also Oscar-winning Matte Painter Matthew Yuricich .
