Atul Dodiya

Atul Dodiya ( Hindi अतुल डोडिया IAST Atul Ḍoḍiyā ; born January 20, 1959 in Ghatkopar near Bombay ) is an Indian artist . He uses the means of painting and drawing to depict traditional and modern themes in India. He is particularly dedicated to depictions of his hometown, the mega-city of Mumbai. Works by Dodiya have been exhibited at the documenta and the Venice Art Biennale .

Life

Atul Dodiya studied art at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Bombay (now Mumbai), and graduated in 1982 with a diploma. 1991–1992 he stayed to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His first exhibition outside of India took place in Amsterdam in 1993. Dodiya's style is realistic, his technique ranges from oil painting to watercolor to drawing. Recurring elements are references to religious representations and the conflict-ridden history of India and Pakistan. The images are often structured by writing. Dodiya lives and works in Mumbai . His wife Anju Dodiya (* 1964) is also an artist, her work is exhibited internationally.

  • 2007: documenta 12 , Kassel. Twelve large-format watercolors with animal and plant motifs as well as overwriting of poems were shown.
