August Engels (born June 25, 1797 in Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ); † April 26, 1874 there ) was a German textile manufacturer and politician .

He was the son of Johann Caspar II. Engels (1753–1821) and Luise Friederike Noot (1762–1822). He was the uncle of the philosopher Friedrich Engels (1820–1895), son of his older brother, the factory owner Friedrich Engels (1796–1860).

Engels married on August 17, 1820 in Barmen Katharina Christina Louise Krebs (1801–1871), the daughter of the businessman Friedrich Krebs (1768–1819) and Sara Katharina Heilenbeck (1770–1825). The couple had two children, Ida and August. Ida married the future factory owner Albert Molineus (1814–1889), son of the Barmer factory owner Wilhelm Johann II. Molineus (1768–1841). August married Maria Elisabeth Wichelhaus , the daughter of the royal Prussian commercial councilor Friedrich Wichelhaus , banker and partner in the company "Wichelhaus & Sohn" in Elberfeld .

Life

Engels first attended the Brucher School, later the city school in Barmen. In 1818 he served as a one-year volunteer with the heavy artillery in Cologne . He then became a partner - until 1849 with his older brother Caspar - in his father's textile factory "Caspar Engels & Sons" in Barmen. From 1820, after the death of his uncle Benjamin (1751–1820) in Barmen, he lived in his house Engelsgang at Engelsstrasse 6 . In 1854 he was appointed royal Prussian Kommerzienrat.

From 1833 to 1834 he was city ​​councilor in Barmen, since 1860 with short interruptions an alderman , elected for the last time in 1872. From around 1840 to 1860 he was a member of the district council . From 1850 he was a deputy member of the provincial parliament . From 1851 to 1854 he was a member of the Prussian First Chamber. In 1860 he was appointed a member of the Prussian manor house , joining on 10/14. January 1861.

Engels was a board member of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft since its inception. For 15 years he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce , six years commercial judges . He was a co-founder of the Lower Rhine music festivals .

Since 1822 Engels was presbyter or representative, in 1827, 1839 and 1851 their church master . He was also a co-founder of the Barmer Beautification Association .
