August Joseph Altenhöfer

August Joseph Altenhöfer (born March 17, 1804 in Kissingen ; † May 12, 1876 in Augsburg ) was a German translator, journalist and editor of the " Allgemeine Zeitung " in Augsburg.

Life

After studying at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , Altenhöfer was initially a temporary assistant at the grammar school in Augsburg in 1832. In 1833 he was the editor of the "Augsburger Postzeitung" and editor and deputy editor of the "Allgemeine Zeitung", of which he was finally from 1865 to 1869. Altenhöfer is considered the author of the Vormärz .

The Scottish essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) wrote on July 1, 1840 from Chelsea (London) to his younger brother John Aitken Carlyle (1801–1879) about Altenhöfer: “A certain German from Augsburg ... publisher of“ Augsburg Gazette ”comes to tea tonight. ... He is a blond, typically German looking, very solid, humble looking man; I like him …"
