Friedrich August Kessler (born December 30, 1826 in Tilsit , Kingdom of Prussia , † April 1906 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Kessler received his first painting lessons from his father Christian Friedrich Kessler (1799–1854). From 1841 he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he was a student of the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer from 1843 to 1854 . Kessler was a founding member of the artists' association Malkasten in Düsseldorf, where he lived as a freelance painter after completing his studies. At times he lived with Eugen Bracht , Fritz Ebel and Carl Friedrich Harveng . He undertook study trips through various coastal, low mountain range and alpine landscapes, in the Teutoburg Forest, to Hesse, through Bavaria, Tyrol, northern Italy, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium. Based on the mode theory of Nicolas Poussin , the writer Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter classified him in 1854 as a “historical-stylistic landscaper”. From 1860 to 1892 he regularly sent to the Berlin Academy exhibitions, and occasionally the exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace .
